The two-day Ed O’Reilly Penning held at the Millarville Racetrack and Agricultural Society on August 25 and 26, was advertised as “rain or shine.”
Saturday, there was “shine” and Sunday there was “rain,” but both days were a huge success.
Ed, Donna, Jesse and Jenna put on a fantastic event complete with a pig roast and all the trimmings. All proceeds from the pig roast ($1,150) were donated to the Children’s Hospital by the sponsor, Fine Rides & Collectibles.
Saturday started out cool and cloudy, but the sun came out to shine on everyone while they enjoyed the barbecue and some socializing. Sunday’s rain made the penning a little messy, but didn’t slow the pace of the competitors. The mud flew in every direction as the horses raced through the puddles to pen the cattle the quickest.
There was as much smiling and laughter during Sunday’s rain as during Saturday’s sunshine. There must have been a lot of tack cleaning in the days following, but I’m sure everyone who participated will look forward to another outdoor penning next year!
The #7 and #5 Class Series Winners were presented with buckles on Sunday, following the tallying of all the numbers.
