For the past 11 years, hundreds of team penners from across Canada and the United States have gathered at the Stampede Corral over the Thanksgiving weekend for the Canadian Team Cattle Penning Association’s (CTCPA) National Finals.
This show gets bigger, better and more exciting with each successive year. $422,600 in cash and prizes -– yes, you read it right the first time, $422,600 in cash and prizes – were awarded during the show to the more than 1,100 teams.
The Open and #6 Shoot-Out Classes comprise a big chunk of the prize money, with the winning teams in each class taking home $10,000 each! The competition is tough in every class and the teams must be consistent as well as fast – times are cumulative.
The fastest teams penning their cattle in four runs (1st Go, 1/2 Back, Top 20 and Top 10) in the least amount of time, take home the cash. And, there’s a class for everyone.
The Century-and-a-half Class is a draw class comprised of only members who are 50 years of age or more and the crowd thoroughly enjoys the non-stop quips from announcers and spectators alike… and the quick retorts from the competitors!
The volunteers keep the show running. They hail from every association and are too numerous too mention. A huge thanks goes out to everyone who helped, but especially to Ron Vogel, President of the CTCPA; Bill Fraser; Denise Guzowski; the tireless and always upbeat announcer, Paulette; Judges; timers; Lynn Beattie; Ann Robson; cattle settlers; arena marshalls and gate operators.
