Montana Breeders Group Horse Sale
Over 600 people attended this year’s 10th Annual MBG Production Sale of world class performance horses.
It was held in the Livestock Pavilion at the State Fairgrounds, Montana Expo Park, Great Falls, MT, on a gorgeous warm Labor Day weekend (September 2) and was sponsored by the North Country Stock Horse Association and managed by the Montana Breeders Group, LLC.
Visitors and buyers alike were treated to the ever-popular free Western style beef barbeque lunch hosted by the Montana Breeders Group (MBG) at noon on Sunday just prior to the sale. This year the sale had over 300 registered bidders coming from WY, ND, ID, WA, OH, FL, CA, UT, MT and three Canadian provinces. Big smiles came from all the successful buyers as they each received (and always popular with the buyers) a long stemmed red rose with each purchase acknowledgment.
Our consignors went all out this year and presented a very colourful and fancy set of top quality performance-bred horses at the annual MBG Sale. Reflecting on this outstanding set of horses offered, the prices were way up.
The high-selling horse brought $8,600 and the average was up on the top-ten horses at $4,135. Prices were especially up on the yearlings and the more advertised and better-known pedigrees on the weanling foals brought better prices as well.
The new MBG auctioneer, Dan Skeels of Alberta proved to be very popular with the audience. He was quite well received and everyone really enjoyed his lively sense of humor.
Russ Pepper of Simms, MT, provided some extra insight into the pedigrees as well. Ringmen were John Goggins, Western Livestock Reporter, Billings, MT; Don Rehm, Record Stockman, Columbus, MT; and Joe Farris, BC; and Garth Isbell, of Cardwell, MT.
Will Rambo and Mountain View Co-op, Great Falls, provided us with the sale ring panels. Flynn Insurance of Great Falls provided the short terms insurance available to any Sale horse purchaser. Dr. Kurt Johnson, Foothills Veterinary Services of Bynum, MT, was on hand to provide health reports for the out-of-state and multitude of Canadian buyers.

As purchaser of the overall high-selling horse, MBG managers presented him with a monogrammed MBG fleece horse blanket. Horse Butte Ranch also consigned an outstanding set of palomino yearlings by their stallions, The Hollywood Buster and Kit Cat Silk 199 that were extremely popular with this year’s attendees.
In honour of the 10th annual sale, Montana Breeders Group, and with the purchase of five head of horses, high volume buyers Nathan and Shelly McAdams of Pinedale, WY, were presented with a Montana silversmith bronze.
Coming down for the sale from northern Saskatchewan, repeat buyers and the buyers of the high-selling weanling, Don and Rhonda Allen of Turtleford, SK, were given a gas certificate for $100 donated by Town Pump, Inc.
Consignors Larry and Juli Jo Kelly of Ulm, MT, brought three really broke horses to the sale again this year. Their horses always much in demand and popular, their flashy stocking legged sorrel gelding, Lot 43, Docs Socks n Stripes sold for $6,000, to happy buyers Bud and Mary Andersen of Whitehall, MT, earning the reserve high-seller honours.
One of the sale attractions this year was the high-selling weanling filly Lot 13, Zips Dashin Silk, x Pretty Classy Zip out of a daughter of Skirt Chasin Alibi. This pretty black filly brought the high-dollar price of $5,000 and was consigned by the Prairie Breeze QH of Fairfield, MT.
