The fourth annual Zone 10 Northern Color Connection Paint O Rama (NCC) was held August 10 to 14, 2006 at the Red Deer Westerner Park Show arena.
The Zone 10 is formed according to geographical standards of the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) and consists of all Canadian provinces from Manitoba to British Columbia, as well as Alaska.
This prestigious show offers a full show program with 90 high point class buckle awards from Gist as well as $9,000 added money for futurities with competitors showing to six judges. High point award winners per category receive beautiful hand-tooled spur straps and reserve receive embroidered red wool coolers.
Weather proved to be one of the biggest challenges for competitors, but the torrential rain, hail, and flooding at the Westerner grounds didn’t manage to dampen the spirits of horse or rider.
Among several of the show highlights was the complimentary pancake breakfast hosted by Carol Kupka and Olga Bungard, a very popular activity every morning.
The vendor trade fair also provided great shopping opportunities for the horse crowd and there was a Keifer Built trailer on display as well.
One of the biggest highlights of the show every year is the coveted Super Horse award. A beautiful saddle donated by Keifer Built Canada and Rocking R Saddlery is awarded to the high point open horse of the show.
The 2006 Super Horse recipient was Chips Diamond Cue Te owned and shown by Julie Pitts from Moose Jaw, SK. Julie and her tobiano gelding “Cody” were a tough team to beat and enjoyed their second win of the Super Horse title, the first being in 2005.
Reserve Super Horse award went to another successful team, Who Needs Therapy owned and shown by Tammy Tollefson. Tammy went home with a beautiful Paint horse sculpture generously donated by Hyde Show Horses.
Another coveted award was the Champion Halter Horse of the show, which was won by More Than Terrific, an overo stallion owned by Phyllis Kinsland, and shown by Mark Gilmore of Washington. A beautiful winter blanket and hood set was donated by Up In Stitches.
The Reserve Champion Halter Horse received a beautiful Paint horse statue donated by Hyde Show Horses and was awarded to Decisive Impulse, an overo mare owned by Susan Carver and shown by Mark Gilmore of Washington.
A new addition to the NCC show was the Two-year-old slot Futurity. Eighteen Zone-10-bred Paint horses were nominated by December 31 of their yearling year with a $500 fee that qualified them to compete this year in a Halter and Western Pleasure Futurity under the six judges. Thirteen two-year-olds returned to compete for the $9,000 pot that would pay to fourth place.
The 2006 NCC Slot Futurity Champion was named Chocolat Chip Eclipse, owned by Lisa Dewilde and shown by Mark Gilmore, and received a cheque for the top payout of $3,240. Chocolat Chip Eclipse is a bay overo gelding sired by Supreme Eclipse.
Another addition to this futurity was the beautiful Billy Cook show saddle that was donated by Irvine Tack and Saddlery, Pipestone Paints, Lil Shaver, and Airdrie Trailer for the top placing Non-Pro ride in the futurity. Julie Pitts, on her bay overo mare, Dynamic Girl Friday, received fourth place overall and received this beautiful award.
With the success of this new slot futurity, entries are already available for 2007, which means that any current yearlings that qualify can be nominated to show for next year.
Jackie Harke and the Zone 10 Paint Horse committee were proud to present the Zone 10 Northern Color Connection, and would very graciously like to thank all of the major sponsors as well as the individual buckle sponsors.
