Ray Mitsuing is no stranger when it comes to competition. When you’re at the top everyone is gunning for you and for years Mitsuing has had to deal with the hard running outfits of Jim Knight and Brian Laboucane.

The Canadian Reining Breeders Classic is entering its fifth year of existence and has long-shed its newbie clothes, now established as one of Canada’s highest profile and prestigious reining events.

Held at the PineRidge Equine Park just outside Winnipeg, MB, this year’s dates are September 13 to 15, giving reiners and spectators three full days of exciting reining competition.

Y NOT Farms and Equestrian Centre of Meaford, ON, was host to the first FEI Young Rider reining classes ever held in North America. The Young Rider classes were part of the FEI CRI 2* reining event held July 14 to 15.

Five young riders competed in two classes over the course of the two-day competition. Darcy Wilson of Goodwood, ON, riding Randy Wilson’s Kachina Catalyst was the high-point winner at the end of the event with a cumulative score of 274 points.

“The FEI Young Rider classes are a great opportunity to introduce riders to international competition, and we were delighted to hold these classes at our event,” stated Ron Lubinski, owner of Y NOT Farms and Equestrian Centre.

The Millarville Ride for STARS is celebrating its 15th anniversary at a new location. This year’s ride will be held at the ranches of Steve Hoar and John Scott west of Longview, AB. It promises to be a very exciting and historical event, with organizers setting a lofty goal to reach $1 million in donations by the ride’s 20th anniversary.

Many aspects of the ride will be the same with the Calgary Stampede Caravan providing their free pancake breakfast with spectacular scenery and a lively auction finished off with a fabulous dinner – not to mention the camaraderie of friends.

The pledge program started last year where riders could get pledges for their ride was highly successful in that it raised close to $10,000 for STARS Air Ambulance. Organizers are hoping to raise more money this year through pledges.

The committee members are currently putting together auction items, raising sponsorship money and finalizing all the details for a spectacular ride.

Live Outside the Box has started up once again! There are already 92 members signed up! This creative program has stirred up a lot of interest and enthusiasm.

AEF members from all over Alberta aged 10-14 are leaving the TV and computer behind and getting out and spending more time with the horse. Not surprisingly we have received a lot of support from parents too!

The organizers of the Alberta Equestrian Games (AEG) had to overcome quite a few challenges during this year’s competition, which took place from August 9 to 12 at the racetrack in Millarville, Alberta.

It’s Monday morning, and 12 people gather on horseback. CEOs, doctors, ranchers, and horse trainers, they hail from all corners of the U.S., Canada, and beyond. Some are beginners, some weekend show warriors, but all eyes are on the lone man in the centre of the arena.

It is Day One of a Galles-Harrel Five-Star Cutting Clinic, and five-time World Cutting Horse Champion and NCHA Hall of Famer Leon Harrel has the floor.
