The year’s end is a time to reflect on the past; a time to look to the future. Over the past century, the Belgian and Percheron breeds across Canada have been on a rollercoaster.

When the national breed organizations were formed, the draft horse enjoyed an explosive trade. Following World War I, the trade slowed substantially until the Great Depression of the 1930s. These were halcyon years for draft horse breeders, as the number of draft horses employed increased.

However, World War II brought this trade to an end. Thousands of heavy horses were sold for slaughter in the years that followed this conflict, as mechanization destroyed a market for the draft horse. Few draft horses were bred during the 1950s and 1960s, for there was no demand for them. Only a breed’s superior seedstock survived these frightful years.

When it was all said and done, it was virtually a wire-to-wire finish for Janine Stianson. The Rocky Mountain Turf Club jockey was the top overall rider for the Spring Meet and the Fall Meet and, naturally, the top overall for the RMTC season.

Stianson went to the post 333 times and brought home 68 winners, placed 48 times, and finished third 52 times for a very impressive 50 per cent average in the money. For the race fan, that means if you wagered at least a show ticket on Janine every time out, you would have been in the money 50 per cent of the time.

The Canadian Professional Rodeo Association’s board of directors is pleased to announce that ladies barrel racing will become a major rodeo event, effective for the 2007 rodeo season.

Until now, barrel racing has been considered a major optional event in Canada, along with team roping. As a major event, barrel racing is now mandatory at all CPRA-approved rodeos and must have prize money equal to the other major events.

“I am thrilled to death!” exclaimed Merry Ann Stoney, the ladies barrel racing representative on the CPRA’s board.

The Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association headed into the 2006 race season with new corporate sponsors, new drivers, new tarp auctions, and new incentives.

Flint Energy Services, Lennox Home Comfort Systems, Roper Apparel and Footwear, The Gold Eagle Casino, Northern Factory Work Wear, and Newcap Broadcasting put their support behind the CPCA.

The Lennox CPCA Race Reports were broadcast on ten radio stations twice a week promoting the CPCA drivers and sponsors and providing fans with news and reviews from behind the barns and around the track.

Each year across the country the best-bred mares are bred to the best stallions money can buy in the hopes of finding that one outstanding individual who will not only make it to one of the many futurities across the country, but also be good enough to win.

Of course, good breeding is a great start to realizing a dream, but it also takes a horseman with outstanding skills to bring out the best in a young horse. This month, we talk to futurity champion Dale Clearwater of Hanley, Saskatchewan, about how he puts a winning fence turn on his cow horses.

Welcome, Chinook Penners, to the 2007 season! As you can see, we have two February shows in Olds this year and two late-August shows making a total of 18 shows!

We have made a change in our #5 class this year. A total of four entries will be allowed, provided one of those entries is a draw team. This, along with the #3 incentive, should make our #5 class bigger and better in 2007.

As well, the Junior Youth time limit has been reduced to 75 seconds, and all Junior Youth competing in numbered classes will be assigned a rating.

We ask that everyone submit their membership prior to the first show, to ease the congestion and confusion and speed up the day.
