The Alberta polo team of Cam Clark Ford travelled down to Santa Barbara, California, to play in the Wickendon Cup 8-Goal Tournament from October 7 to 15, 2006 and came back winners!

There were five teams entered in the tournament, with each team playing each other once over the course of the eight-day event. The Cam Clark Ford team consisted of the following players: Cam Clark (A); Dayelle Fargey (2); Kyle Fargey (2); and Mariano Gutierrez (4).

Canadian Shawna Sapergia of Cochrane, AB, brought home the bronze medal from the FEI World Reining Masters held October 17 to 22, 2006 in Denver, Colorado.

Competitors from 18 different countries including the United States, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Israel, Switzerland, and Belgium gathered under the flags of their countries to battle for the title of FEI World Reining Masters Champion, many mounted on borrowed horses.

Rider Scott Hanson of Mountain View, AB, and horse Spoonfula Quick, owned by Connie Down-Cicoria of Calgary, were named Open Futurity Champions of the 2006 Wrangler Cutting Horse Futurity.

The 25th annual event ran October 10 to 15 at Stampede Park and awarded a total prize purse of $297,150 in six categories.

“This is a very popular event,” said Rod Stirling, event chair. “It’s Canada’s largest and richest cutting horse competition and we had more than 250 riders and horses from across Canada and the United States participate this year.”

The Whitemud Equine Learning Centre (WELC), located alongside the river in the heart of Edmonton, is one of Alberta’s most unique boarding and lesson facilities.

Besides its location mere minutes from the downtown core, WELC is also a not-for-profit organization. WELC has leased the land from the City of Edmonton since 1958, which is protected from development by the City’s “Ribbon of Green” park initiative.

The facility consists of three barns, an indoor riding arena, three outdoor sand rings, two grass show rings, and numerous pastures. It is a spacious operation, but several shortcomings are limiting the expansion that administrator Mari-Lyn Hudson would like to see.
