Alberta is home to one of the greatest horse shows and futurities in North America. The Canadian Supreme is a top-notch showcase where some of the finest bloodlines and riders come to compete for the top spots.

It is a show that focuses specifically on western performance horses, where cutters, reiners and working cow horses are annually crowned as champions of the Canadian Supreme. Exhibitors and owners alike share their goals in owning and/or riding a Canadian Supreme champion. As the years go by, the competition gets tougher and the horses get better, and this was one of the best we have seen.

“Absolutely great – It was one our of largest futurites to date!” is how Alberta Reined Cow Horse Association President Jim Dobler described the 13th annual Goodyear Snaffle Bit Futurity and Championship held in Claresholm, AB, August 31 to September 2.

This year’s show saw over 110 entries in total, with cash and prizes topping $50,000. Many of Canada’s most accomplished Open riders, horse owners and Non Pro competitors, came in from Saskatchewan, Montana, BC, Washington, and all parts of Alberta, to participate in what is becoming known as one of the premier cow horse events in Canada and the northwest U.S.

Renowned Western artist Paul Van Ginkel (www.paulvanginkel .com) has received three commissions from the Canadian Supreme to depict cutting, reining, and working cow horse.

This year, Paul’s original oil painting is a dynamic cutting horse scene (pictured right in the artist’s studio).

Each of the three paintings will be used to promote the Canadian Supreme’s annual event through posters and other advertising and editorial avenues.

The image will also be reproduced into a limited edition of 50 prints. Each print is signed by Paul, measures 30×20” (plus frame) and sells for $950.

Also, you will have the rare opportunity to purchase the original painting at the event on Friday, September 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the Westerner Park in Red Deer, AB.

Congratulations to ARCHA cow horse competitors at the 2007 Calgary Stampede!

Tom Sawatzky was thrilled to win the Non Pro Bridle Championship on his gelding PC Got True Grit.

Veronica Swales won the Reserve Non Pro Bridle for the fifth time aboard her gelding Will Smoky James.

Vance Kaglea claimed the Open Bridle class on Monica Willie’s gelding Smoke N Pep

And also the Ltd. Open Bridle Champion as well as riding Sonitas Last Boon owned by Colleen and Tom Sawatzky.

John Swales won the Reserve Ltd Open Bridle on All Reddy Doc owned by Doug Sapergia.

Clint Swales claimed the Open Hackamore Championship riding Latigo owned by Bob O’Callahan.

Cayley Wilson of Abbortsford, BC, claimed the Reserve Open Hackamore riding Starlit Holly.

John Swales also claimed the Reserve Lt. Open Hackamore aboard Opalleto Lena owned by David Meadows.

The 24th Annual Super Stakes competition was held July 20 to 22 in Claresholm, Alberta. Over $64,000 was paid out in the various classes.

Judges for the 2007 Super Stakes were Joe Jones from Washington and Frank Craighead from Texas. Featured were the four-year-old Open and Non Pro Super Stakes Class, Open and Non Pro High Five, Working Cow Horse Four/Five-year-old Derby, Open and Non Pro, and Open and Non Pro Bridle.

This very busy weekend displayed some excellent cutting and cow horse performances. Smart Precious Date had very proud owners as they watched Dale Clearwater of Saskatchewan show this talented mare to the Open Four-year-old Championship.

Vance Kaglea of High River, AB, was sitting in the driver’s seat in the final go-round of the Working Cow Horse Classic July 15 as part of the Stampede Stock Show.

Kaglea qualified two horses into the top two spots in the final round and he didn’t waste the opportunity. He nailed the reined work and tamed a difficult cow in the cow work to take the lead with Smoke N Pep owned by Monica Wille.

“It doesn’t matter what the run was like before,” explained Swales. “You just try to ride that horse on that day the best you can ride that horse and hope he’s having his day.

The Alberta Cow Horse Association is gearing up for its annual Goodyear Canadian Snaffle Bit Futurity and Championships to be held at the Claresholm Agriplex August 31 to September 2.

NRCHA judges Pete Bowling and Tom Buckingham will be the weekend judges.

The futurity has been steadily increasing in entries every year along with increased payouts and sponsorship. This year’s futurity includes $25,000 in added purse money and $10,000 in prizes.
