Mandy McCutcheon (pictured left) became the first woman to earn more than $1 million in reining competition this spring.

The 30-year-old Tioga, Texas, resident reached the milestone with her victories at the National Reining Breeders Classic April 20 in Katy, Texas.

McCutcheon rode Rawhides Banjo to the championship in the Non-Pro division and took reserve honours in the same event with I Spin For Chics. In all, these performances were worth $57,000.

Both horses are owned by her father, Tim McQuay.

Renowned Western artist Paul Van Ginkel (www.paulvanginkel .com) has received three commissions from the Canadian Supreme to depict cutting, reining, and working cow horse.

This year, Paul’s original oil painting is a dynamic cutting horse scene (pictured right in the artist’s studio).

Each of the three paintings will be used to promote the Canadian Supreme’s annual event through posters and other advertising and editorial avenues.

The image will also be reproduced into a limited edition of 50 prints. Each print is signed by Paul, measures 30×20” (plus frame) and sells for $950.

Also, you will have the rare opportunity to purchase the original painting at the event on Friday, September 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the Westerner Park in Red Deer, AB.

FEI Reining Stewards Course in Oklahoma City

The NRHA will be holding an FEI Stewards Course during the NRHA Futurity this fall. Deadline for application is October 29.

The Canadian Reining Breeders Classic is entering its fifth year of existence and has long-shed its newbie clothes, now established as one of Canada’s highest profile and prestigious reining events.

Held at the PineRidge Equine Park just outside Winnipeg, MB, this year’s dates are September 13 to 15, giving reiners and spectators three full days of exciting reining competition.

Y NOT Farms and Equestrian Centre of Meaford, ON, was host to the first FEI Young Rider reining classes ever held in North America. The Young Rider classes were part of the FEI CRI 2* reining event held July 14 to 15.

Five young riders competed in two classes over the course of the two-day competition. Darcy Wilson of Goodwood, ON, riding Randy Wilson’s Kachina Catalyst was the high-point winner at the end of the event with a cumulative score of 274 points.

“The FEI Young Rider classes are a great opportunity to introduce riders to international competition, and we were delighted to hold these classes at our event,” stated Ron Lubinski, owner of Y NOT Farms and Equestrian Centre.

Gabe Hutchins and Juiced Up Doc won the 2007 Adequan/ USEF Open Reining National Championship at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Hutchins and Juiced Up Doc ended on a score of 226. In his first year of FEI competition and his first try at the CRI**** level, Hutchins stared down the best.

He was second to go in the class and after putting up a great score on the strength of excellent spins he waited while some of the top reiners in the world tried to beat the standard he set.
