The Bar U Ranch National Historic Site of Canada, with the participation of the Friends of the Bar U Historic Ranch Association, staged its ninth annual Old Time Ranch Rodeo, an event that literally made history as the site’s most widely attended day ever.

Over 1,000 appreciative fans watched as the Rocking P Ranch team, of Nanton, AB, comprised of members Mac Blades, Justin Blades, Blake Schlosser and Logan Bird, took top prize, though the win was anything but easy.

This practical approach to roping is gaining popularity among working ranch cowboys and horse owners that are interested in learning new livestock handling skills.

The Alberta Reined Cow Horse Association has begun hosting a series of educational clinics for the 2007 season. One of the first clinics, held February 24 in Red Deer, was with Ron Anderson, who gave a very informative and entertaining look at the function and history of the hackamore and bridle bits.

Although Ron only had one day with the 20 cow horse enthusiasts who attended, he was able to touch on a rich 400-year history of the Vaquero hackamore and bridle bits. (Vaquero is Spanish for “cowboy” and is pronounced paquero.)

Farmfair International, hosted by Northlands Coliseum held the second annual Heritage Ranch Rodeo November 3 through 5, 2006 with this year’s event being even more exciting than the previous year.

The Heritage Ranch Rodeo is typical of many of the ranch rodeos and gives the working cowboys a chance to showcase their cowboy skills while their families and spectators have a little fun in the capital city.

Ranch roping is a method of roping and doctoring cattle in a low-stress environment with the emphasis on the well-being of the livestock and the skill of the riders and their horses that have learned the traditional methods of roping and doctoring cattle.

As a spectator and participant event, this method of roping is just coming into popularity in rural communities with the formal development of the Canadian Ranch Roping Association (CRRA) in 2004.
