“This is the first time I’ve ever won a futurity,” says Doug Reinhardt of Irricana, AB, after capturing the 2007 Wrangler Cutting Horse Futurity Champion title aboard three year-old CD Hickadu owned by Edward Forner of Lyalta, AB. The Futurity final was held in the Corral at Stampede Park on Sunday October 15.

Twenty-two finalists battled for the prestigious honour after two days of Futurity competition. Reinhardt set the standard with a score of 218.0 partway through the final round. The closest challenger would end up being Reinhardt himself on another client’s horse, My God Im Smart, owned by Dean Ness of Lougheed, AB.

Alberta is home to one of the greatest horse shows and futurities in North America. The Canadian Supreme is a top-notch showcase where some of the finest bloodlines and riders come to compete for the top spots.

It is a show that focuses specifically on western performance horses, where cutters, reiners and working cow horses are annually crowned as champions of the Canadian Supreme. Exhibitors and owners alike share their goals in owning and/or riding a Canadian Supreme champion. As the years go by, the competition gets tougher and the horses get better, and this was one of the best we have seen.

The Bar U Ranch National Historic Site of Canada, with the participation of the Friends of the Bar U Historic Ranch Association, staged its ninth annual Old Time Ranch Rodeo, an event that literally made history as the site’s most widely attended day ever.

Over 1,000 appreciative fans watched as the Rocking P Ranch team, of Nanton, AB, comprised of members Mac Blades, Justin Blades, Blake Schlosser and Logan Bird, took top prize, though the win was anything but easy.

While comparing notes with my friend and fellow trainer, Jimmy Anderson, we agreed that we have a mutual pet peeve within the reining industry. A common thorn in our side is the reluctance of our non-pro riders to ride one handed.

Whenever the situation gets tough, they always revert back to two hands. The problem is that they then plow-rein the horse left, right, here and there, and in doing so totally mess up the horse’s frame.

The Calgary Stampede has begun a comprehensive chuckwagon safety review in response to an incident at the GMC Rangeland Derby on July 14 that resulted in the death of three horses and the injury of driver Tyler Helmig.

The Stampede has struck an internal review committee that will fully analyze the incident to understand all of the contributing factors with the goal of finding new ways to strengthen safety at the annual GMC Rangeland Derby chuckwagon championship.

The Western Horse Sale, now in it’s twelfth year, was held during the 2007 Canadian Supreme Show and Trade Fair at the Westerner Agriplex on September 28. Sixty-eight horses were presented to the buying public under the gavel of Dan Skeels of Ponoka, AB. Forty-five horses were sold for total sales of $210,400.

The high-selling horse of the sale was Lot 44, consigned by Gordon and Cindy Conley of Castor, AB, and sold for $22,000. He was a handsome four-year-old sorrel gelding sired by Pepinics Master and purchased by Brent and Debbie Salmon of Lacombe, AB.
