It is up to the judge to evaluate the performance and assign final placings on the basis of the class rules and guidelines from their vantage point in the ring. However, different classes offer different challenges for a judge.
Individual performance classes such as Western riding and trail allow the judge to pick a vantage point in the ring where she believes she will have the best view to assess the performance. While group classes such as Western pleasure require a judge to pick a vantage point that will allow for the best view of the majority of the exhibitors at any one time.
