Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, BC, showed spectators what horsepower was all about during their West Coast Classic June 27 to July 1, with Jaguar and Land Rover of Richmond sponsoring the $20,000 Canada Day Grand Prix.

International course designer Danny Foster put together a Grand Prix that included a bank, water jump, two combinations and plenty of room to get up a good gallop. Six horse-rider combinations advanced to the jump off with clear fast rounds.

Christina Marlin is used to jumping with the big guns, but to rise to the top in a field of more than 30 amateur riders is still a big deal, especially on a young and challenging horse.

Marlin, from St. Albert, AB, jumped her way to first place in the Kirchman Family Junior Grand Prix, a 1.3-metre event held as part of Spruce Meadows’ Skyliner Tournament in June.

Among the top 1.30-metre event jumpers, she then placed second in the Red Deer Advocate Final Four.

The Skyliner Tournament, established last year, is strictly for amateur and junior riders, and boasts almost 400 entries from Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.

The Western conference of Canada’s only national, coast-to-coast show jumping series heated up when 36-year-old Gary Brewster of West Vancouver, riding Hurricane, won the $40,000 Kubota Cup Grand Prix on the infield of Edmonton Northlands race track.

Brewster snatched the Western conference lead from Calgary’s Albert Kley, who finished out of the money and dropped to third in qualifying.

In June 2’s event, 28 Western Canadians fended off a challenge from four American entries. Foreign competitors can compete for prize money in the individual series events, but are not eligible to qualify for the Kubota Cup National Final. “Fun and fast, great sport,” said Brewster. “I asked Hurricane to step up and he, obviously, did.”

Canada’s eventing, show jumping, and dressage teams are on their way to Pan American Games

Eventing 

Following a successful spring training and competition program, the Canadian Eventing Team who will represent Canada in the 2007 Pan American Games (PAG), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, July 14 to 29 has been chosen.

Five rider/horse combinations are named to the team and nominated to the Canadian Olympic Committee. Named to the team (in alphabetical order) are:

For its 25th year, the Edmonton Northlands Horse Show kicked off in the infield of the racetrack at Northlands Park. From May 29 to June 3 harness racing came second at the track as over 330 hunter/jumper competitors vied for over $160,000 in prize money.

With the $40,000 Kubota Cup Grand Prix, $25,000 ATCO Cup and $20,000 National Bank Financial/Paramount Energy Trust Grand Prix, the show attracted several of Canada’s top riders including Jonathan Asselin, Tamie Phillips, and Lisa Carlsen.

It was a full few days of equestrian action at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, BC, from May 23 to 27, but after five days of competition it was time to get the big class of the week underway: the $50,000 CSI** Spring Classic Grand Prix.

The day got started bright and early in the hunter and jumper rings as riders trotted their horses out one last time. Clouds rolled in, but competitors and spectators alike barely noticed the weather. Courses were walked, rounds were taken, and ribbons were handed out.

Calgary’s Albert Kley jumped to victory in the $75, 000 ATCO/ Kubota Centennial Grand Prix at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, in Brandon, MB, on March 31.

Kley, riding his veteran Hannoverian gelding Daiquiri SM (16 years old) was one of only three in the 32-horse entry to qualify for the jump off.

The capacity crowd at Brandon’s Keystone Centre erupted in celebration when Kley–a crowd favourite in Brandon for 32 seasons–seized the victory ahead of British Columbia’s Gary Brewster and Karen Cudmore of Omaha, Nebraska.
