Irish show jumper Niall Grimes, who suffered a heart attack on September 28 while in Lexington, at the Kentucky National Horse Show, died on October 3 at the age of 31.
His heart attack was thought to be related to a condition that developed over a period of time, and was ultimately a result of arterial blockage, which led to cardiac arrest. He collapsed while standing in the Annex schooling area (the closest ring to the EMT station).

The Western Canadian Finals of the 2007 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series were held during the Thunderbird Summer Festival in Langley, BC, August 22 to 27.
Hometown favourite and Canadian Olympian Laura Balisky claimed the championship title in the Seven- and Eight-year-old Division riding Simba. Owned by Thunderbird Show Stables, Simba is a seven-year-old imported chestnut Belgian Warmblood gelding.

Gary Brewster of West Vancouver, BC, emerged the winner in the Western Division of the Jump Canada National Talent Squad Series following the final event held August 25 at the Thunderbird Show Park Summer Festival in Langley, BC.
In the opening event of the Western division, the $10,000 Spring Welcome Grand Prix at the Thunderbird Show Park Spring Classic, Brewster piloted Watermark, a 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding owned by Gail Le Nobel, to a fifth place finish and followed up by earning 10 points in two different Grand Prix events at the Thunderbird Summer Horse Show in mid-August.

Show jumper Eric Lamaze, of Schomberg, ON, became only the second Canadian in history to win the world’s only million-dollar show jumping competition.
As he was presented with a cheque for the $325,000 winner’s share in the CN International at Spruce Meadows, Lamaze spoke to the crowd of more than 60,000 enthusiastic fans. He told them that his great mount, Hickstead, “loves to hear you make noise and clap over every jump.” The 39-year-old Lamaze was treated like a rock star by autograph-seeking fans as he tried to leave the arena.

Medal wins in eventing, show jumping, and dressage secure Team Canada’s spot at 2008 Olympic Games
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - The Canadian eventing team of Kyle Carter, Sandra Donnelly, Waylon Roberts and Michael Winter has won the silver medal at the XV Pan American Games that took place from July 14 to 29 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The third and final phase of competition, show jumping, took place on Sunday, July 22, at the National Equestrian Centre located north of downtown Rio. Team and individual medal ceremonies immediately followed.
When eight-year-old Fernando Marqués received a horse as a surprise gift from his parents, it was the beginning of his lifelong passion for horses.
Besides sparking his interests in veterinary medicine and equine health research, Marqués’ fascination with horses led to his exciting career in Argentina’s show jumping rings. Ranked in the second of eight levels of show jumping in Argentina (one being the highest), Marqués has experienced an inexplicable bond with the horses he has ridden.

The Spruce Meadows summer tour came to a close on July 8 with an outstanding send off as riders competed in the international ring to a crowd of nearly 40,000.
The feature events of the day were the $75,000 Sun Life Financial Reach for the Sun and the $175,000 Chrysler Classic Derby.
The first competition was the Sun Life Financial Reach for the Sun. Twenty-eight horse/rider combinations jumped for a spot into the winners’ circle. The rider to earn that honour was American Carolyn Kelly and her mare Rulanda.
