The World’s Grand Champion Saddlebred horses were crowned the last weekend in August before a crowd of nearly 15,000 at Louisville, Kentucky’s Freedom Hall for the World’s Championship Horse Show.

A South African-bred horse ridden by a Californian claimed the $100,000 “Big Stake” as Michele Macfarlane won the Five-Gaited title aboard (SA) CCV Casey’s Final Countdown, co-owned by Si-Si Stables and Macfarlane.

The American Saddlebred Museum at the Kentucky Horse Park has been awarded a Silver Telly at the 28th Annual Telly Awards for its film Out of The Shadows.

The 30-minute film, which features black horsemen from the late 1800s through to the 1970s, was chosen among 15,000 entries for the highest prize offered by the Telly Awards.

The Tellys honour outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as video and film productions. Out of The Shadows competed in the Non-Broadcast category.

It was a bitterly cold winter evening when Team Canada boarded the plane heading for Johannesburg to compete in the 2006 World Cup of Saddle Seat Equitation.

After more than 20 hours of travelling time, they stepped off the plane to a balmy 28 degrees Celsius and the journey of a lifetime was underway.

The World Cup of Saddle Seat Equitation is held every other year alternating between the United States and South Africa. This year, the prestigious international competition will be held from December 4 to 10, 2006 at South Africa’s premier equestrian facility: the Parys Indoor Arena in Parys.

For 2006, Canada will be taking on teams from the United States, Great Britain, Namibia, and South Africa. In addition, Australia and Sweden are considering entering.

The American Saddlebred Horse Association of Alberta was pleased to host the 2006 edition of the Western Canadian Championship Show, which was held August 18 to 20 at Westerner Park in Red Deer.

The show featured classes for American Saddlebreds, Morgans, and Andalusians as well as Open and All Breed classes. A true highlight at this show is always the American Saddlebred Alberta Futurity classes and this year saw an increase in entries, particularly in the yearling division.
