For the first time, the Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association Fall Classic Breeders’ Sale broke the half-million-dollar mark in total sales. The 2007 gross of $582,450 was $200,000 higher than in 2006.

Also for the first time, a sale horse is being exported to Europe. Blind Date, bred and owned by Touchstone Farms, was the high-selling Section B horse and is going to Switzerland with his delighted new owner Annina Madlaina Flisch.

The high-selling horse of the sale was Ushi, owned by Lori Stokowski. This beautiful mare not only showed great performance both under saddle and in the chute, but is also in foal to Contango. Ushi’s price of $51,000 is a new sale record. She is going to Spruce Grove with new owner Marie Morton.

The Western Horse Sale, now in it’s twelfth year, was held during the 2007 Canadian Supreme Show and Trade Fair at the Westerner Agriplex on September 28. Sixty-eight horses were presented to the buying public under the gavel of Dan Skeels of Ponoka, AB. Forty-five horses were sold for total sales of $210,400.

The high-selling horse of the sale was Lot 44, consigned by Gordon and Cindy Conley of Castor, AB, and sold for $22,000. He was a handsome four-year-old sorrel gelding sired by Pepinics Master and purchased by Brent and Debbie Salmon of Lacombe, AB.

The Alberta Quarter Horse Breeder’s Group is again teaming up with Northlands to offer their Fall Select Sale during Farmfair International in early November. In 2007, the show is slated for Saturday, November 3 in the UFA main show hall at Northlands AgriCom. The horses are displayed earlier in the day for interested buyers.

Explosive! The Gray Transportation Percheron Production Sale held by Leroy and Carolyn Gray, Fairfield, Iowa, Friday, June 8, was explosive… exceptionally explosive.

Sixty-one head of pedigreed Percheron horses averaged $10,153, smashing all previous breed records. Bidders from across the continent stood 12 deep ringside. Many were horsemen from Western Canada. Your correspondent assisted John Marg of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, who was the auctioneer on the block.

Albertans had reason to be excited. Fifty-nine of the sixty-one horses Leroy and Carolyn Gray catalogued for sale, descended from Justamere Showtime, the breed sire that brought American buyers in number to the province. Last owned by the Wm. Gordon Young of Cayley, Justamere Showtime was bred by Jonathan Fox III of Lloydminster.

Ryan Smith of Champion Auctions and Fleetwood Farms Quarter Horses is donating a registered AQHA two-year-old filly (pictured right) to be sold at the fourth annual Western Working Horse Sale on July 28 at the Claresholm Agriplex, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to the 4-H Legacy Fund.

It is with the help of donations like this from individuals, clubs, and corporate businesses that the 4-H Legacy Fund has reached $150,000.

This year’s Wild Rose Draft Horse Sale, held in Olds, Alberta, May 4 and 5, gave credence to its nickname, “The Biggest Little Sale in the West!” The crowd in attendance surpassed every expectation.

Every parking space in the fairgrounds was filled, while vehicles lined the adjacent streets. Over 1,000 numbers were issued to prospective bidders, these in addition to the bidder numbers in the computer issued in previous years.

The pundits maintain that this year’s Wild Rose Draft Horse Sale was the largest public auction ever held on the fairgrounds. There is reason to believe this was true.

“I came for one horse and bought three,” said long-time livestock breeder Les Steem from Silveron Stock Farm in Leduc, AB.

Steem is talking about his purchases at the recent Ranch Horse Sale. This unique sale was held in conjunction with a ranching industry tradition: The Calgary Bull Sale.

Fourteen ranch horses offering quality bloodlines in a complete go-to-work-for-you package were auctioned off on March 7 at the Victoria Pavilion on Stampede Park.
