Britain’s first coloured, full Thoroughbred foal was born at West Down Stud in Devon.

“Ben” is the first foal of the US-imported stallion I Was Framed, who was the first Thoroughbred to be registered as coloured with Weatherby’s.

Saturday, February 3, proved to be the beginning of an adventure. When my husband Dan, our hired help Jen, and I arrived home to our farm Kaliber Equine Services in Didsbury at 8:45 pm, we decided to check the horses in the barn.

“Loving Art” (Art) owned by Jerry and Sharon Renkers of Lil Dude Ranch in Surrey, BC, was two weeks overdue and ready to foal any day and she had started to wax earlier that day. At about 9:00 p.m. her water broke, so we decided to wait around to watch her foal, as Jen had never seen a mare foal before.

The colt cloned from Valerie Kanavy’s two-time world champion endurance horse Pieraz will stand at stud in France for the first time this season.

Pieraz-Cryozootech-Stallion, who was born in Italy in February 2005, was bred specifically to become a breeding horse. He will stand at Domaine de Castelcerf, near Lyon, from April to September this year for fresh semen, and with chilled and frozen semen at other centres. His service fee is €1500 ($2,300 CAD).

Pieraz was twice world champion with two different riders. In 1994, he won at The Hague with Valerie riding, and again in 1996 at Fort Riley with Danielle Kanavy. He won 12 160-km races during his career.

Classic Performance Horses is a family owned and operated business located approximately 30 minutes west of Edmonton, AB, north of the Yellowhead highway.

Primarily a training facility, as Loren trains and shows cutting and cow horses, the Christianson’s stallions are another source of income for the family. Leaving the breeders to own and raise the babies, and hoping for a chance to ride the offspring one day is what seems to work for this farm.

Griffin Quarter Horses is a family owned and operated business located in southern Alberta and southern Oklahoma.

Lance Griffin along with his wife Terry and daughter Samantha have been involved with horses for many years. In the beginning you could find the Griffin’s travelling down the road from team penning to team penning with their four-horse trailer in tow.

In 1995, that all changed as Samantha began taking reining lessons – their world was never the same. Lance and Samantha headed to their first reining horse show, which was the first ever Cardston Derby, in Cardston, Alberta.

‘Myterra Ranch is a family-based business owned and operated by Ed and Connie Masson and their son, Benjamin. Its core land base has been in the Masson family name for nearly 100 years.

Located in the rolling sand hills of east central Alberta, near the small towns of Cadogan and Metiskow, it is home to a Quarter Horse breeding program centered on the great stallion Pepinics Master.

The Masson’s strive to raise horses that are athletic, balanced, trainable, good looking and that have great dispositions. The horses grow up in native grass pastures developing their athletic ability as they run and play up and down the hills, dodging the occasional badger hole and buck brush patch.

To many people, cloning is a pretty creepy process: Taking cells from a donor animal, placing them into eggs that had their own genetic material removed, mechanically introducing the cell or fusing the two with a jolt of electricity, and voila! Life begins. The living embryo is then implanted in a mare for carrying to term.

But in the not very distant past, many considered organ transplantation and in vitro fertilization techniques (i.e., test tube babies) to be abominations, as well.
