The 2007 Manitoba Horse Expo’s Youth Extravaganza drew a large and enthusiastic crowd to the event co-hosted by the Manitoba 4-H Program and the North American Equine Ranching Information Council (NAERIC).

The Youth Extravaganza was held October 26 during the Wheat City Stampede – a weekend of equine activities and attractions, at the Agricultural Centre of Excellence Arena at the Keystone Centre in Brandon, Manitoba.

A record crowd of just under 24,000 horse enthusiasts converged on Chilliwack, BC’s Heritage Park October 19 to 21 to take in the Mane Event Equine Education and Trade Fair.

The wet weather outdoors did not deter the enthusiasm indoors where the crowds filled the seats at every clinic and demonstration, and filled the aisles of the trade fair.

Clinics during the three-day event ranged from western pleasure to reined cow horse and dressage. American show jumping team chef d’equipe George Morris – whose clinics gave local riders a rare opportunity to learn from a show jumping icon – was overwhelmed with the response he received.

Equine Affaire will return to Pomona, California, for the eighth time January 31 to February 3, 2008.

The event’s educational program will include more than 150 different clinics, seminars, and demonstrations by renowned national and international trainers, competitors, and coaches.

The impressive week-long Region 17 Arabian Horse Show took place from July 31 to August 5 and boasted approximately 1,200 entries comprised of around 300 full and half Anglo-Arabian horses.

Hosted at the Agricentre at Westerner Park in Red Deer, Alberta, Region 17 is geographically the largest North American region of the Arabian Horse Association (AHA); comprised of the Western Canadian provinces from BC to Manitoba as well as the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and the Yukon.

Managing a world class horse show that remains profitable and well-attended year after year is an accomplishment worth discussing, just as I did with Dean Thomson, this year’s National Quarter Horse Show manager.

I was able to catch up with Thomson on Day 3 of the week-long event held August 21 to 26 in Red Deer, AB, to discuss the changes and progress of the annual show.

During the first weekend of August, competitors gathered at Amberlea Meadows in Edmonton, Alberta, for its Summer Dressage Festival. The event also ran the Prairie Zone’s Canadian Performance Futurity Dressage classes for the second year, with an increase in the number of horses vying for the cash prizes.
