Hannah Friesen and her Curly filly SS Satin Savanah.
Did you know our curly horse history in Canada goes back over 100 years? Hans Skonskberg brought the first known Curly into Canada in 1900. He captured the horse at a water hole and it was thought to have belonged to the Indians. Hans was the father to Ole, the youngest of three children. Hans continued to breed the Curly horses, specializing in pinto’s, and Ole was still breeding these awesome horses when I visited with him in 2004. He has since passed but the family tradition lives on. Many Curly horses will show Skonskberg in their bloodlines. We received a wonderful email from a very happy Curly horse owner, Hannah Friesen. She wrote: “Riding Savanah is a REAL BLAST! She was a really soft back! Not hard and uncomfortable! And she hasn’t bucked once, at all! But the hay IS making her gain a few more pounds than necessary! LOL! But that is better than less I suppose!”
Hanna’s father, Allen, had extreme allergies to horses. Lovely Hannah had been emailing for a few months as she fell in love with SS Satin Savanah from her pictures and stories on the website. She finally convinced her parents to drive to Alberta and check out the horses. First the allergy test had to be passed and Allen was very surprised when he had no allergic reaction at all to the Curlies. He did have a bit of a reaction when they entered the arena with the other horses inside, but none at all to the Curlies. So now Savanah has a wonderful new home.
Savanah’s mom is SS Annie’s Oakley, who was Sunnybrook Stables winner of the Alberta Horse Improvement Program as Superior Bred Alberta Mare. Oakley has another award winning filly that went to Tanja in Germany, SS Oakley’s Ahani Spright. Savanah’s sire is the infamous SS Walcurly Winchester who has numerous foals around the world.
SS Annie’s Oakley’s full sister, SS Annie’s Buffalo Girl, is also now in Germany. Pictures of her journey can be seen at www.curlys.ca/PageSSPics07GermanyDec.html
